Nokia Situations: Make Symbian Mobile Smarter and adapt your Living



Wouldn't it be great if your mobile knows when to set the Alarms, activate Silent Mode, start the music player and more but everything automatically.


Nokia Beta Labs team has just released a neat little app that automatically adapts your phone to your current needs or situations. Now all that can be achieved with the help of Nokia Situations and much more like you have a personal assistant with you in your phone.



Choosing  Actions To Take:


You can set any combination of the following actions in any situation and there action will be performed at you want it to happen:



  • Change Ringtones: This can set ringing style like make the phone go silent or louder, turn vibra on/off, and all the other profile settings.

  • Answer missed calls with SMS: Especially when you set your phone to silent, you can also make it reply to missed calls, from contacts in your phonebook, with a pre-defined SMS.

  • Save Power: Not using phone for a while, like when sleeping? Turn Bluetooth on/off or let your phone change to power-saving mode totally.

  • Change Theme or Wallpaper: Want to make the phone look different in different situations? Change the Theme during free time vs. when you are at work.

  • Open a Web bookmark or application: Let's assume you like to listen music when u get up and brush your teeth. Want to see weather forecast for the day when you wake up? Look at the calendar as first thing? Open the Ovi Map when it time to go the office and get traffic updates.


Choosing The Conditions:


To make the device to act on the situation, you can tell the device to watch for the following conditions (separately or in combination)



  • Scheduled:

    • Set period of time – Like at this time or between this time

    • Set active days – At this date or day once, every day or on particular days

    • Set during active calendar events – meetings, concerts, outings and more.



  • Location:

    • Nearby – GSM locations or nearby known places

    • Current location –  GPS locations

    • From Map –  Selecting locations from Ovi maps



  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi (when in range), Bluetooth (when connected to a device)



Note that this is still an experimental application however we can indeed hope that the application will be refined as it is developed further. However, be advised that not all Nokia Experimental apps that showed up in the beta labs see the light of the day.


But since this is a rather innovative and attractive proposition, chances are that it will, much like Swype went gold a few days ago. At first sight you might confuse Nokia Situations with the basic Symbian profiles app, but I am sure when you use it's for a while you will realize that it's far more capable than the normal profile settings.
